Dark wooden beams, cosy nooks and a huge collection of antique bells (we lost count somewhere around a hundred), the Old Bell embodies everything that's best about the traditional Scottish pub. We pride ourselves on a well kept selection of cask ales - Deuchars IPA is a permanant fixture, and we ring the changes with several guest ales on a regular rotation.
Malt whisky is another speciality, we keep an extensive collection of the classic malts and some rarer and more obscure examples from all over Scotland. And how can you have a wonderful restaurant upstairs without a wonderful wine list? As a result we have one of the best wine selections of any traditional pub in the city.
As with all "proper" pubs, the entertainment has evolved to suit the clientele rather than the other way around. There's a quiz every Sunday at 7.30, with a £40 jackpot and a few other prizes every week. We regularly show sporting events on a (admittedly non-traditional) collection of large plasma screens; racing, football and rugby are particular favourites. Edinburgh's two clubs, Hearts and Hibs, are both represented in roughly equal measures. The rather tongue-in-cheek tradition is that the Hibs fans get the seats nearest the kitchen and the Jambos get the seats closest to the front door - read into that what you will!
The regulars organise many events of their own, with regular golf tournaments and days at the races giving them the chance to escape the pub briefly. There are always plenty of other games on the go, with a football predictor adding a little spice to the games and raising some money for charity into the bargain.
Peckish? Mildly hungry? Ravenous even? Our bar menu has everything from a snack of paté and toast, through substantial sandwiches and all the way to an 8oz steak with all the trimmings. We've sourced ingredients from independant suppliers from across Scotland, all prepared with the same love and care as the restaurant upstairs - it's just a little more simple.
